The Vienna Rathaus is a wild piece of architecture - combining a few different stylistic threads into an impressive whole. The dramatic lighting and massive Christmas Market in front of it make the whole scene even more impressive!

Elizabeth and Peter were invited to sit on a final review last week for the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame. Always great to be invited to help shape young minds, but there was a melancholy to this jury duty - “final review” this time didn’t just mean for the students’ project, it also meant for the current building, as the SoA is moving to its new home in January. The end of a long and memorable era! We’ll miss you Bond.

Excited to announce that Matt will be participating in a live-drawing event next week entitled SCENOGRAPHIA, which is free and open to the public! This two-day event is intended to celebrate the living art of Architecture and to draw public awareness to the importance of traditional hand drafting in an increasingly digital world. This November 2nd-3rd in Chicago’s Merchandise Mart, three teams of architectural artists will live-draw three murals over the course of two days. Spread the word and we’d love to see you there!!

At the conclusion of the mural drawing process, there will be a cocktail reception at which noted Chicago architect and urban designer Thomas Rajkovich @tnrajkovicharchitect will deliver commentary on the importance of the skill of hand drafting in the modern world.

The Fountain of Four Rivers by Gian Lorenzo Bernini is one of the greatest Baroque public works of art, and has been so for more than 350 years. Incredible to think how many people have been drawn to this masterpiece that Bernini himself was ashamed of - so much so that he would draw the curtain in his carriage whenever he passed by it!

Piazza Navona at sunrise. Where ancient Roman foundations create the framework for centuries of architecture to intersect with modern life. Also one of only a couple places you can see the two Baroque titans of Bernini and Borromini engaged in immortal-design-combat (but don’t believe the Rio Della Plata story!). Hands down, one of the greatest urban places in the world.

A townhouse renovation we completed in DC breathed new life into underused spaces, for example creating a large kitchen flooded by light from the rear yard, wherein the owner, who loves to cook, could engage with guests instead of remaining holed-up in the galley. We’re grateful for such fantastic clients!

Elizabeth’s watercolor of Matt’s drafting produced this study rendering for a private residence we designed in the Italian Art Nouveau idiom of Stile Floreale, or Stile Liberty (depending on who you ask), referencing a number of fantastical works from northern Italy. Our favorite style! Btw, That’s a very large art glass window in the shape and color of a peacock feather but replete with allegory. No faux Nouveau here!

It was a little over a year ago at this point when we were able to visit a finished project that we had lovingly worked on for years with our friends at MHTN Architects. Here’s one of our 30+ stained glass window designs, this one featuring the Madonna Lily. We introduced a bouquet of meaning here as well. Photos just don’t do it justice!

Great architecture is truly a commitment. Not a transaction but a relationship, not only with the clients and colleagues, but also with the site, materials, the environment (both built and natural), and perhaps most importantly, with the emotions and cognitions of the building’s users. We genuinely poured heart and soul into the details and we think that is reflected in the final product, and we feel blessed to have had incredible collaborators, colleagues, and clients on this!
