MGLM ARCHITECTS

the art of design

The fantastic Monadnock from our office building. This shot primarily shows the southern part of the building built in 1893 and designed by Holabird & Roche. Far more detailed (on the exterior at least) than the northern end designed by Burnham & Root in 1891, but less well known because the B&R design is the tallest exterior load-bearing masonry building ever built. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monadnock_BuildingInterestingly, Monadnock is a Native American term for an “isolated rock formation rising abruptly from a surrounding plain.” Do you think the name had anything to do with the solid masonry walls?
