Evening in Nara

MGLM Architects’ proposal for a National Museum for Art and Architecture in Norway. The design features heroic forms and details evocative of the myths and traditions of Nordic culture. The great hall is flanked by two entry towers crowned by illuminated glass atria that mark the building and site as one of national importance. Integrated with the museum is a school with research facilities to further the study and appreciation of both art and architecture throughout the country.
The evolution of renderings: Having plenty of architect and designer peers, we’ve noticed more and more that hand rendered presentations are quickly giving way to computer created renderings showing hyper realistic scenes. While accurate and faster to produce than hand drawing, these computer drawings are often less able to convey the magnetism or romance of a hand sketch or watercolor of the past.
As a firm educated in traditional drawing, we were faced with the question of how to create old school renderings but make them as efficiently as possible and able to be reproduced and transmitted without large overhead. Experimentation finally led to the great ah-ha moment. With computer programs such as Painter and Photoshop, we’re now able to mimic the look of hand techniques with a digital tool. We’re literally painting the drawing on the computer as we did by hand! Above is just one example of how today’s technology can be embraced without losing that all too important human touch.
